Chicken and rice are perhaps the most comforting food for me. I am fine with most meat, however, chicken is such as easy and delightful choice, you don't have to think twice, right? What really appealed to me about the Chicken Rice Shop was the wholesome home-cooked flavours, comfort at its best!

If you love rice and chicken as much as I do then I highly recommend Chicken Rice Shop whenever you visit Kuala Lumpur. The eatery has outlets in most food courts in top shopping malls. My brother and sister in law insisted we try it and during my stay of just 15 days I visited it twice because I couldn't get enough of the food.

Starting with appetizing entrees, we tried Sai to fish balls, Pak Choy with Oyster Sauce, KerabuMango and Nyonya Pai Tee.

Kerabu Mango Salad

A Malay tangy mango salad. Slivers of green mango are tossed in palm sugar, fish sauce, finely chopped bird eye chillies and lime juice further garnished with crushed peanuts. The dressing adds an umami kick but the peanuts add the smoothness and texture. It is a mix of tangy, sweet and spicy with a very refreshing taste.

Pak Choy (Bak Choy) with Oyster Sauce

A simple yet immensely flavourful side dish that you can pair with chicken rice. Bak Choy is stir-fried with garlic and a sauce made with sugar, soya sauce and oyster sauce. I can eat this with just rice and still enjoy it!

Sai Too Fish Ball Soup

I fell in love with fish balls in Malaysia because I never had these before. Bouncy, soft, delectable fish balls in a savoury, soothing soup made of chicken broth, green onions and primarily flavoured with sesame oil and soya sauce. Garnished with fried garlic. It felt so good devouring this comforting and delicious bowl.

Nyonya Pai Tee

This was perhaps my favourite entree, even though the rest of them were also delightful. Little thing savoury pastry pockets filled with shredded vegetables and served with a spicy sauce. The crunchy pastry, fresh veggies and then dipped in sauce, it was a flavour bomb and really enjoyed every single bite.

For the main dishes, we ordered Hainanese Chicken and Honey BBQ Chicken. Every main dish was served with aromatic, umami chicken rice.

Hainanese Chicken

I fell for Hainanese Chicken enough to learn how to make it myself later. Slow-cooked chicken in chicken stock, ginger and green onions, resulting in a savoury, juicy chicken that literally melts in your mouth. The chicken is drizzled with Kecap Mani (sweet soya sauce) alongside scallion oil and chilli sauce. It is one of my favourite comfort dishes in the world.

Honey BBQ Chicken

This is not the western BBQ chicken. It is actually the Chinese Char Siu Chicken and has a slightly different bbq sauce because it uses soya sauce and Asian spices which adds a delicious punch to the sweet and savoury flavours. The chicken was so saucy and cooked to the bone, I was left wanting more!
